Who is Spec. Dt. Merve Akbudak?
Spec. Dt. Merve Akbudak is a periodontist at İkon Dental in Istanbul: a dentist who specialises in the gums and the bone that hold the teeth. Dt. Akbudak studied dentistry at Kocaeli University and completed specialist training in periodontology at Bülent Ecevit University.

Gum disease and gum recession
Bleeding, swollen or receding gums are often the first signs of gum disease. Left untreated it can loosen teeth. Treatment cleans below the gum line and, where needed, uses gum surgery; receding gums can sometimes be covered again with a soft-tissue graft.

An implant needs healthy gums and enough bone. Bone and soft-tissue grafts can rebuild what is missing before or during implant treatment, and inflammation around an existing implant (peri-implantitis) can be treated.

My gums bleed when I brush. Should I see a periodontist?
Bleeding gums are worth having checked, because they are often an early sign of gum disease. Send us a photo or a recent X-ray, or mention it at your examination.
