Illustration for explanation only. Which teeth need a crown, and the material for each, is decided from your own examination and scan.

In short

An E-max crown is an all-ceramic crown made from lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic; E-max is the name most people know it by. It covers the whole of a broken, heavily filled or discoloured tooth and is usually bonded to it. It has no metal inside, and light passes through it in a way that resembles natural enamel, which is why it is often chosen for front teeth.

The worry we hear most is simple: will people be able to tell? With a well-chosen shade and shape, often they cannot. Each crown is designed from a digital scan of your teeth, and you see shade and shape before anything is fixed.

How it works — 4 steps

  3. Shade, preparation and scan.Under local anaesthesia, with temporary crowns while the final ones are made.
  4. Try-in, then bonding. You approve the look before anything is fixed, and your bite is checked.

1 Before you travel · From home

A first answer before you book anything

Send a few photos of your teeth, or a panoramic X-ray if you have one, on WhatsApp or through the form. A dentist reviews them, and our international team replies in your language.

What we ask you

  • Photos of your teeth or a panoramic X-ray
  • Your general health and any medication
  • What bothers you most about your teeth now
  • Which dates could work for you

What you receive

  • Your treatment options, explained
  • A price range
  • The days and visits you would need in Istanbul
  • A final plan only after your examination

2 In Istanbul · Arrival and examination

We meet you, examine you and confirm the plan

  • Airport and hotel. We coordinate your airport transfer and your stay with partner hotels near the clinics, including the Sheraton Grand Istanbul Esenyurt and Days Inn by Wyndham Istanbul Esenyurt.
  • Examination at the clinic. Day one starts with your examination and a digital scan of your mouth, with X-rays or a 3D tomography (CBCT) where your teeth need them.
  • The plan, in person. Your dentist goes through the images with you and confirms the plan, or explains any change and why. Treatment then follows the written plan you approve.
  • In your language. Our international department works in English, Arabic, French and Turkish.

3 In Istanbul · Shade and shape

We decide the look with you

  • Crown or less? For each tooth your dentist asks whether it really needs a crown, or whether a veneer, a filling or whitening would keep more of it.
  • Treatment first, if needed. A root canal, a filling or gum treatment is done before the crowns. Healthy gums matter here, because the edge of a front crown sits right at the gum line.
  • Shade in good light. Front teeth are never one flat colour. You and your dentist choose the shade together, looking at the edges, the middle and the teeth around them.
  • Whitening comes first. E-max keeps the colour it is made in. If you want your other teeth lighter, whitening is usually done first and the crowns are matched to the new shade.

4 In Istanbul · Preparation and scan

Your teeth are prepared, scanned and protected

  • Local anaesthesia. The teeth are numbed, so you should feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Your dentist explains the anaesthesia options for your case beforehand.
  • Preparation. A layer is removed all round the tooth to make room for the ceramic. E-max needs a certain thickness to look natural and stay strong, and your dentist balances this against keeping as much of your tooth as possible.
  • Digital scan. The prepared teeth and your bite are recorded with an intraoral scanner; our clinics use iTero Lumina and 3Shape TRIOS scanners. Your crowns are designed and made from this scan.
  • Temporary crowns. You wear temporary crowns while the final ones are made. They give you a first feel for the new shape, but they are not as strong, so avoid biting into hard food with them.

5 In Istanbul · Try-in and bonding

You approve your crowns, then they are bonded

  • Try-in. The temporaries come off and the crowns are tried on each tooth. Your dentist checks the edges at the gum and the contacts with the teeth beside them.
  • Your verdict. You look at colour, shape and length in the mirror, close up and at talking distance. Please speak up here: this is when changes are easiest.
  • Bonding. Each tooth is cleaned and prepared, and the crown is bonded with a resin cement. Bonding supports the ceramic and helps the edges blend in.
  • Bite check. Your dentist checks how your teeth meet and how your front teeth glide when you move your jaw, and adjusts any spot that touches too early. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended.

6 Aftercare · Back home

Looking after your E-max crowns

E-max crowns are cleaned like natural teeth. A soft brush and a non-abrasive toothpaste keep the glazed surface smooth, and the edge where crown meets tooth needs cleaning every day. Routine check-ups can be done with a dentist near your home.

After you fly home, your coordinator stays in touch and your dentist is one message away for questions and follow-up.

Often a good fit if …

  • A front tooth has large fillings, chips or a fracture
  • A tooth has darkened after a root canal treatment
  • An old crown shows a grey line at the gum
  • You need a single crown where the look matters most
  • You want crowns that blend in closely with your natural teeth

Worth discussing first if …

  • Heavy grinding, back molars or a longer bridge → zirconia crowns may hold up better
  • Healthy teeth and a cosmetic change only → porcelain veneers may be enough
  • A missing tooth → a crown on a dental implant
  • Active gum disease or untreated decay → treated first, then crowns

Not sure? Send us a few photos of your smile. A dentist will tell you whether E-max, zirconia or a veneer suits each tooth, or whether you need a crown at all.

A crown chips or feels loose, your bite still feels high after the first days, a tooth aches when you bite or starts to throb, or the gum around a crown stays red or sore.

What it does not do

E-max resists staining, but it does not respond to whitening, so the shade you choose is the shade you keep. A crown also does not protect the tooth underneath from decay at its edge or from gum disease.

Not reversible

Enamel removed for a crown does not grow back. A prepared tooth will always need to be covered. If a veneer or a filling would do, your dentist tells you.

Sensitivity

Prepared teeth are often sensitive to cold at first. It usually settles without treatment. Tell us if it does not.

Chips and fractures

E-max is strong, but less so than zirconia. Heavy grinding or biting hard objects can chip or crack it.

The nerve of the tooth

A tooth that was already deeply filled may need root canal treatment later, even under a well-made crown.

A crown comes loose

Uncommon with bonded crowns. If it happens, a crown can often be cleaned and bonded back in place.

Shade over the years

Your natural teeth can darken slightly with time while the crown keeps its colour, and gums can recede so that an edge becomes visible.

What changes the price

The number of crowns, the material for each tooth, E-max where the look matters most and zirconia where strength does, and any root canal, filling or gum treatment your case needs first.

What to ask for in writing

  • The teeth to be crowned and the material for each, by name
  • What the price includes
  • The days and visits planned in Istanbul

Travel and stay

We coordinate airport transfers and accommodation with partner hotels near the clinics. Ask your coordinator what your quote includes.

Only if your case needs it

Extra steps such as whitening, root canal treatment, gum treatment or a night guard are explained and written into your plan before treatment starts.

No price is final until a dentist has examined you. Your plan is confirmed after your examination and digital scan in Istanbul.

Questions about E-max crowns

The questions we hear most often. If yours is not here, ask us on WhatsApp.

What are E-max crowns?

E-max (or emax) crowns are all-ceramic crowns made from lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic. Fine crystals in the glass give it strength, and the glass gives it a depth that resembles enamel. There is no metal inside.

E-max or zirconia: which is better?

Neither is better everywhere. E-max usually looks more lifelike and suits front teeth and single crowns. Zirconia is stronger and is often chosen for back teeth, implant crowns and longer bridges. Your dentist recommends one for each tooth. Read more about zirconia crowns.

Are E-max crowns strong enough?

For front teeth and many single crowns, generally yes. For heavy chewing areas, longer bridges or people who grind strongly, your dentist may suggest zirconia instead.

Should I choose a crown or a veneer?

If the tooth is healthy and you want a cosmetic change, a veneer may be enough and removes less of the tooth. If the tooth is heavily filled, broken or root-treated, a crown usually protects it better.

Does getting an E-max crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia while it is prepared, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles.

Do E-max crowns stain, and can they be whitened?

The glazed ceramic surface resists staining well, but it does not respond to whitening. If you want your natural teeth lighter, whitening is done first and the crowns are matched to them.

How long do E-max crowns last?

They can last many years when they are cleaned well and checked regularly, but not for ever. Gum health, grinding, biting habits and the condition of the tooth underneath all affect how long they last.

How much do E-max crowns cost in Istanbul, Turkey?

We do not publish fixed prices, because the cost depends on how many crowns you need, the material for each and any treatment needed first. Send us photos of your smile and you receive a price range with your written plan, free and with no obligation.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

It depends on how many teeth are treated and whether a root canal or gum treatment comes first. Your written plan states the days and visits you would need, before you book flights.
