Illustration for explanation only. Your dentist plans the position, length and angle of each implant from your own 3D tomography.

In short

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is a small screw, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone. Once it has healed, it carries a connector called an abutment and a crown made to match your other teeth. The teeth next to the gap are not ground down, as they would be for a conventional bridge.

If several teeth are missing, not every one needs its own implant. Each implant can carry its own crown, or a few implants can carry a bridge that replaces several teeth in a row. Implant treatment is usually planned in more than one visit, with a healing period at home in between. Your written plan states the days and visits you would need in Istanbul.

1 Before you travel · From home

A first answer before you book anything

Send a few photos of your teeth, or a panoramic X-ray if you have one, on WhatsApp or through the form. A dentist reviews them, and our international team replies in your language.

What we ask you

  • Photos of your teeth or a panoramic X-ray
  • Your general health and any medication
  • What bothers you most about your teeth now
  • Which dates could work for you

What you receive

  • Your treatment options, explained
  • A price range
  • The days and visits you would need in Istanbul
  • A final plan only after your examination

2 In Istanbul · Arrival and examination

We meet you, examine you and confirm the plan

  • Airport and hotel. We coordinate your airport transfer and your stay with partner hotels near the clinics, including the Sheraton Grand Istanbul Esenyurt and Days Inn by Wyndham Istanbul Esenyurt.
  • Examination at the clinic. Day one starts with your examination, a 3D tomography (CBCT) and a digital scan of your mouth.
  • The plan, in person. Your dentist goes through the images with you and confirms the plan, or explains any change and why. Treatment then follows the written plan you approve.
  • In your language. Our international department works in English, Arabic, French and Turkish.

3 In Istanbul · Implant day

The implant, placed where your scan says

  • Local anaesthesia. The area is numbed first. You are awake and should notice pressure and vibration, not pain. Your dentist explains the anaesthesia options for your case beforehand.
  • The implant is placed. The gum is opened a little and the implant is set into the bone at the planned position. If you need several implants, they are often placed at the same appointment. A tooth that cannot be saved is sometimes removed at the same time and sometimes earlier, so the bone can heal first.
  • The gap while you heal. The implant is covered by the gum or by a small healing cap. Depending on where the gap is and how firmly the implant sits in the bone, a temporary tooth may be possible. Your dentist tells you beforehand what to expect, and what the alternative is.
  • Before you fly. Your dentist checks the area and explains how to keep it clean, what to eat, and what is normal in the first days.

4 At home · Healing

Healing while you get on with life

Over the following months the bone grows onto the surface of the implant and holds it firmly. Dentists call this osseointegration. It cannot be hurried, and the final crown is only made once it is complete. If a graft was needed, healing can take longer.

Your coordinator stays in touch, and your dentist is one message away if you have a question or want to send a photo.

5 In Istanbul · Your final crown

The abutment and your final crown

  • Check and digital scan. Your dentist checks that the implant has healed firmly and takes a digital scan of the implant and the teeth around it.
  • The abutment. A small connector called an abutment is attached to the implant. It carries the crown, or the bridge if several teeth are replaced.
  • Shade and shape. The crown is made to match the colour and shape of the teeth beside it. You see it in your mouth before it is fixed.
  • Fitting. The crown or bridge is fixed in place and your bite is checked carefully. You are shown how to clean around it at home.

6 Aftercare · Back home

Looking after your new teeth

Daily cleaning and regular check-ups keep implants healthy. Routine check-ups can be done with a dentist near your home.

After you fly home, your coordinator stays in touch and your dentist is one message away for questions and follow-up.

Often a good fit if …

  • You are missing one tooth or a few teeth
  • A tooth cannot be saved and has to be removed
  • The teeth next to the gap are healthy and you want them left alone
  • You want a fixed tooth, not a removable partial denture
  • You can keep up daily cleaning and check-ups

Worth discussing first if …

  • Most teeth in one jaw are failing → All-on-4 or another full-arch option may make more sense than many separate implants
  • You would prefer a metal-free implant → zirconia implants
  • The bone at the gap is thin → a bone graft or a sinus lift may be needed first
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, active gum disease, heavy smoking or pregnancy → we talk about timing first

Not sure? Send us your X-ray or a few photos. A dentist will tell you whether an implant makes sense for your gap, and what the alternatives are.

What you do

  • Take your medication as your dentist explains it
  • Chew on the other side while the area is tender
  • Keep the area clean the way you are shown
  • Avoid smoking, which slows healing

Contact us if …

Swelling keeps getting worse instead of settling, you have a fever, bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure, numbness in your lip or chin does not wear off, or the healing cap or a temporary tooth feels loose.

What it does not do

An implant replaces the tooth, not the cleaning. It cannot decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque is left there, and the natural teeth beside it can still decay.

Swelling and bruising

Common in the first days, and more likely after several implants or a graft. Rest, cold compresses and the medication your dentist prescribes help it settle.

Infection

Uncommon, but possible after any surgery in the mouth. Keeping the area clean and following your instructions lowers the risk.

An implant that does not bond

Sometimes an implant does not bond with the bone and has to be removed. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes raise this risk.

Nerves, sinus and neighbouring roots

Rare. A nerve runs through the lower jaw, the sinus sits above the upper back teeth, and the roots of the teeth beside the gap are close by. Planning from your 3D tomography is there to keep the implant clear of them.

Inflammation years later

If plaque builds up, the gum and bone around an implant can become inflamed. Dentists call this peri-implantitis. Daily cleaning and regular check-ups are the protection.

The crown can chip or loosen

A crown, or the small screw that holds it, can chip or work loose over time, especially if you grind your teeth. This can usually be repaired without touching the implant.

What changes the price

The number of implants, whether each one carries a crown or a few carry a bridge, the implant system, the crown material, and any extractions or extra steps your case needs.

What to ask for in writing

  • The implant system and crown material, by name
  • Whether the abutment and the crown are included
  • The days and visits planned in Istanbul

Travel and stay

We coordinate airport transfers and accommodation with partner hotels near the clinics. Ask your coordinator what your quote includes.

Only if your case needs it

Extra steps such as bone grafting or a sinus lift are explained and written into your plan before treatment starts.

No price is final until a dentist has examined you. Your plan is confirmed after your examination, 3D tomography and digital scan in Istanbul.

Questions about dental implants

The questions we hear most often. If yours is not here, ask us on WhatsApp.

Does getting a dental implant hurt?

The implant is placed under local anaesthesia, so you should notice pressure and vibration, not pain. Soreness and some swelling afterwards are normal in the first days, and your dentist prescribes medication for that.

Will I have a gap while the implant heals?

That depends on where the gap is and how firmly the implant sits in the bone. In some cases a temporary tooth is possible; in others the implant is left to heal under the gum or a healing cap. Your dentist tells you which applies to you before you decide, so ask us if this matters to you.

Do I need one implant for every missing tooth?

Not always. When several teeth in a row are missing, a few implants can carry a bridge that replaces all of them. Whether separate implants or an implant-supported bridge suits you depends on the bone and on where the gaps are. Your dentist recommends one after seeing your 3D tomography.

What if I do not have enough bone?

Bone shrinks after a tooth is lost, so this is a common question. Where the bone is too thin, a bone graft may be needed, and in the upper back jaw sometimes a sinus lift. Both can add healing time. If your case needs one, it is explained and written into your plan before treatment starts.

How much do dental implants cost in Istanbul, Turkey?

We do not publish fixed prices, because the cost depends on the number of implants, the implant system and the crown material. Send us an X-ray or photos and you receive a price range with your written plan, free and with no obligation. No price is final until a dentist has examined you.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

It depends on your case. Implant treatment is usually planned in more than one visit, with a healing period at home in between. Your written plan states the days and visits you would need, before you book flights.

How long do dental implants last?

Implants can last many years when they are cleaned well and checked regularly. Smoking, gum health and teeth grinding all affect how long they last. The crown on top may need repair or replacement over time.

Is İkon Dental authorised to treat patients from abroad?

Yes. İkon holds the International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health, for its Başakşehir and Hadımköy clinics. You can see the certificate on our international patients section.

What do I need to send for a first assessment?

A recent panoramic X-ray is ideal. If you do not have one, clear photos of your teeth and a short note about your dental history and general health are enough to start.

This page is general information and does not replace an examination by a dentist.
