Who is Dr. Hakan Yılmaz?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Yılmaz is an orthodontist and the medical director of İkon Dental. He trained at Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry, specialised in orthodontics, and taught and researched at universities in Turkey and Australia before joining İkon in 2021.
As medical director he is responsible for İkon's clinical standard across the three clinics. In his own practice he treats crooked teeth and bite problems with clear aligners and braces, and plans the cases in which orthodontics, jaw surgery or aesthetic dentistry work together.
His research has focused on digital dentistry: intraoral scanning, 3D models, digital treatment planning and their accuracy compared with conventional methods.
Training and career
- 2021 – todayMedical Director, İkon Dental, Istanbul Associate professor (Doçent) since 2021.
- 2020 – 2021Yeditepe University Faculty of Dentistry Assistant professor, academic and clinician.
- 2018 – 2020Istanbul Okan University Faculty of Dentistry Assistant professor, academic and clinician.
- 2016University of Sydney Faculty of Dentistry, Australia Visiting researcher in the Department of Orthodontics.
- 2013 – 2018Bülent Ecevit University Faculty of Dentistry Research assistant and specialist dentist in orthodontics.
- 2008 – 2013Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry Degree in dentistry.
What does he treat?
His work centres on orthodontics for teenagers and adults, and on the planning of combined cases.
- Clear aligners
- Metal and ceramic braces
- Lingual orthodontics
- Impacted canines and incisors
- Open bite and deep bite
- Upper and lower jaw growth problems in children
- Orthodontics with jaw surgery
- Digital smile design
- Retainers
- Jaw-joint problems and teeth grinding
Clear aligners
He completed Invisalign Certification Training with Align Technology (2021) and has trained with other clear aligner systems, including ClearCorrect. For patients who want straighter teeth without fixed braces, he plans the movement of each tooth digitally before treatment starts. Read more about orthodontics and clear aligners at İkon.
Combined and digital cases
Some smiles need more than one field: orthodontics before veneers or implants, or orthodontics together with jaw surgery. He plans these cases with 3D imaging, intraoral scans and digital models, so each step is clear before it starts.
Research and publications
Dr. Yılmaz's research has focused on digital dentistry and orthodontics: the accuracy of intraoral scans and 3D models, digital treatment planning, impacted teeth and root resorption. His CV lists 24 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, three further articles and reviews, and four book chapters. Each article links to its DOI and, where it is indexed, to PubMed.
A presentation he co-authored at the Academy of Osseointegration 36th Annual Meeting (2021) received the Best Oral Scientific Award.

Questions patients ask
Can I have my orthodontic treatment with Dr. Yılmaz if I live abroad?
Orthodontic treatment needs regular check-ups over a long period, so it mainly suits people who live in Istanbul or can travel there regularly. Send us photos of your teeth and he will tell you honestly whether a plan around your travel is realistic.
Does he only treat orthodontic patients?
Orthodontics is his field. As medical director he also oversees the clinical standard across our clinics and plans combined cases with the other dentists.
Which languages does he speak?
Turkish and English. Our international department also works in Arabic and French.
